Who We Are

Connecting Generations Through Culture and Community

The Chinese Center offers cultural, educational, and social programs for all ages, including Chinese language classes, cultural workshops, outreach programs, and monthly speakers on topics like history, arts, and contemporary issues. Members can join clubs such as Senior Club, Ballroom Dance, Table Tennis, MahJong, Toastmasters, and performing arts. We also provide practical programs in health, finance, and genealogy, as well as scholarships for young leaders. Many youth return as volunteers, working alongside long-time members to support the Center's mission. Visit us to experience all we offer.

Our History

The Chinese Center on Long Island (CCLI) was founded in 1960 as a cultural organization dedicated to studying, sharing, and preserving Chinese heritage and traditions. Founders John Hwang, Dun Li, George Lee, and Pete Louie envisioned a place where Chinese culture and language could thrive. On April 13, 1962, CCLI became a non-profit corporation, marking the official beginning of its journey.

Later that year, the Center presented a classical Chinese opera at Freeport High School, receiving positive recognition from The New York Times. This support led to the donation of a 28-room mansion in Old Westbury. As the space proved impractical, members searched for a permanent home and acquired the current 2,400-square-foot building in West Hempstead in March 1967. Through member pledges, the mortgage was fully paid by 1972.

Over the years, the Center has continued to modernize. Renovations in the 2000s improved the foyer, computer lab, restrooms, meeting hall, and exterior. In 2016, major ADA-compliant upgrades were completed, including new accessible entrances, expanded restrooms, updated doorways, and an enhanced lobby — ensuring the building serves all members.

CCLI offers cultural programs in art, literature, music, Chinese language, Lion Troupe, and traditional folk dance, along with lectures on contemporary topics and opportunities for community involvement. The Center continues to thrive through the dedication of volunteers, new members, and long-time supporters who uphold the legacy of its founders. We welcome all who wish to join us in preserving and celebrating Chinese culture.
